Genk

Food & Drink

The cultural diversity of Genk makes eating out in the city a real gastronomic experience. The immigrants who came to Genk to work in the coal mines brought with them wonderful culinary flavours from all over Europe. El Greco Greek restaurant on Hoevenzavellaan serves classic Greek dishes such as moussaka and lamb stew and it also has an excellent vegetarian menu.

Another great Greek restaurant in Genk is Babi. With live Greek music and traditional dancing, there’s always a good atmosphere to complement the delicious food. The signature dish at Babi is its kalamari (squid), which it proudly claims is the best in Europe!

For a taste of Turkish cuisine, try the Anatolia on Europalaan. Its wonderful meze dishes and main courses, cooked in a traditional Turkish oven, and its mouth-watering homemade Turkish delight, are real treats for the tastebuds. Wash it all down with one of their excellent wines from the Aegean coast.

A little closer to home, Ganghista  on Stationsstraat is a traditional Belgian brasserie offering both French and Flemish cuisine. Established for over 25 years, it has a good reputation among the local population and is always busy. There’s a terrace garden for enjoying dinner al fresco in the summer, as well as a winter garden so that meals can still be enjoyed in beautiful surroundings even when it’s cold outside.
