Gent
Food & Drink
Waterzooi is Gent’s trademark dish. It’s a creamy chicken stew with vegetables and potatoes. Another Flemish favourite is carbonnade flamande, a thick beef stew cooked in mustard and beer.
Patershol is the main area for eating out and has a great range of good quality restaurants. Perhaps one of the best is Bij den Wijzen en den Zot (Hertogstraat), which serves up traditional Flemish favourites such as eel. Also serving good Flemish staples at reasonable prices is Brasserie the Moka on Koestraat.
Pakhuis on Schuurkenstraat is a large restaurant in a renovated textile warehouse and is well worth a visit even just for the interior – the large cast-iron pillars and balustrades are impressive. For something more informal, Brooderie (Jan Breydelstraat) has a great menu packed full with wholesome, healthy snacks, lunches and light meals, as well as mouth-watering cakes and pastries for a mid-afternoon treat.
