Hasselt
Food & Drink
Hasselt’s most famous product, the aromatic juniper berry flavoured spirit called genever, can be sampled in all the bars and cafes as well as at various distilleries across the city, many of which offer guided tours and tasting sessions.
As far as eating out is concerned, there’s no shortage of good restaurants in the city. ‘T Kleine Genoegen (Raamstraat) is a charming, family-run traditional restaurant hidden up a narrow cobbled alley. The Flemish-French menu is seasonal and therefore changes every couple of weeks, always serving up the freshest produce available locally.
Le Bouchon on the Fruitmarkt is also well worth a visit. Its sleek, contemporary interior reflects the style of its creative, modern menu and it has a great selection of wines from all over Europe. There’s an outdoor terrace on the cobbled square and an ultra-trendy bar area for enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail.
For something a little different, the Sombrero Mexican buffet restaurant on Genkersteenweg is a great dining experience. With its rustic, wooden cantina-style décor and bright Latin colour scheme, it creates an authentic and lively Mexican atmosphere. The buffet is all-inclusive and guests pay their bill before taking their tables. Included in the price is an aperitif and a soup course followed by generous buffet tables of starters, main courses and desserts and a coffee to finish off.
