Leuven
Food & Drink
Leuven is proud home to two Michelin star restaurants. The Belle Epoque on Jules Vandenbemptlaan is housed in an elegant 19th century mansion with a lavishly decorated interior. It serves French and Flemish specialities cooked to perfection by chef Ludo Tubée. Equally luxurious is Orange par Roland Debuyst on Leuvensesteenweg, which has a much more contemporary feel, with its bold orange interior and inventive menu.
Oesterbar on Muntstraat serves deliciously fresh seafood and of course a wide variety of oyster dishes. Ombre ou Soleil, also on Muntstraat, is a Mediterranean restaurant with wonderful fish and meat specialities with more than a hint of Mediterranean flair.
Needless to say, there’s no shortage of beers in Leuven, capital of Belgium’s brewing tradition. The barley-based Stella Artois is the favourite among tourists and locals alike. However, beer isn’t Leuven’s only alcoholic speciality. Flavoured spirits such as Leuvens Meloentje (melon), Leuvens Pechke (peach) and Leuvens Nootje (nuts) are popular variations of the national drink genever.
