Oostende

Food & Drink

Oostende is still an important fishing town and is renowned for its fresh fish and seafood markets and restaurants. Take a stroll along the bustling Visserskaai (Fisherman’s Wharf) to watch the fishing boats haul in their catches, then check out the fish market, which supplies restaurants and retailers all over Belgium. All sorts of fish and seafood are on offer, from traditional Belgian favourites such as herring, mussels and eel to North Sea staples such as cod and shrimps.

De Mangerie on Visserskaai is a well established Oostende restaurant. Opened in 1918 by a fishing family, it still prides itself on its fish and seafood menu and always serves the freshest catches of the day. Further along the quay, David Dewaele on is another popular fish and seafood restaurant with an outdoor terrace.

The palatial Thermae Palace Hotel is a great place to soak up the splendour and opulence of this grand holiday resort town. It’s a magnificent 1930s art deco creation with a reputation as Oostende’s most prestigious hotel, and it has various restaurants to suit different tastes.

It’s never hard to find a good place to drink in Oostende. Two excellent traditional Belgian bars serving a wide selection of beers and ales are the  ‘t Ostens Bierhuis  on Louisastraat and the Café Botteltje further along the same street.
